Feeding Therapy

Setting the Table for Success

Children that experience trouble eating may deal with health, learning and social problems as a result. Speech Language Pathologists can help children with feeding and swallowing, to avoid common complications such as dehydration, poor nutrition, or food or liquid getting into the airways.

Your child may need help with feeding or swallowing if they:

  • Cry or fuss when feeding

  • Have problems breastfeeding

  • Arch their back or stiffen when feeding

  • Have trouble breathing while eating or drinking

  • Refuse to eat or drink

  • Eat only certain textures or are very picky

  • Cough, gag or spit up during meals

  • Have problems chewing

  • Drool a lot

  • Have congestion during or after meals

  • Have difficulty drinking from an open cup or straw

  • Are not growing or gaining weight

A Speech-Language Pathologist can work closely with you and your child to determine the source of the child’s difficulties, including but not limited to:

  • Sensory issues

  • Behavioral problems

  • Autism

  • Head and neck problems

  • Nervous system disorders, such as meningitis or cerebral palsy

  • Reflux and other stomach issues

  • Prematurity or low birth weight

  • Heart Disease

  • Cleft lip or palate

  • Asthma

  • Muscle weakness in the face and neck

Depending on their findings, Speech Language Pathologists can collaborate with an Occupational Therapist for a holistic approach to feeding. Let our therapists who specialize in feeding and swallowing help you and your child gain the skills necessary for proper nutrition and enjoyable mealtimes.
