Developmental Disabilities Awareness
Developmental milestones are things we consider to be important or meaningful learned behaviors in early childhood. We are familiar with the most major developments, for instance, our first words, first steps, first smile. As children reach these different developmental milestones, it gives us an idea of their rate of development or areas which need additional assistance or attention. These measured milestones are to produce a sense of common developmental benchmarks, but all children learn at different rates and can always have conditions which affect development.
Developmental disabilities can be found in many types of scenarios, often during pregnancy, often genetic, but can be associated with environmental influences which can increase the risk of developing some conditions.
What Kind of Conditions are Related to Developmental Disabilities?
Many of the conditions that are present at birth, such as fetal alcohol syndrome, chromosomal conditions such as Down syndrome, or premature birth are considered or are related to developmental disabilities. About one in six children in the US have some kind of developmental disability. Hearing loss and impaired vision are examples of developmental disabilities along with autism, ADHD, and cerebral palsy. These indicators will guide caretakers and parents in the right course and pace to help their children learn and develop at their own pace.
It is important to recognize that developmental disabilities are usually not affecting a person’s health or motivation to do the same types of things anyone might be motivated to do. Developmental disabilities don’t get in the way of a person to be able to feel fulfilled about their life or to be involved with their community.
Resources in Your Community
Each March, NACDD (National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities), teams up with AUCD and NDRN in promoting a social cause that helps all of us, with any abilities to join each other in contributing to and being a part of a diverse community.
Join them in their effort to raise awareness: #DDawareness19
