Sensory Sensation Sorting Game

Our Sensory Sensation Sorting Game is a hands-on activity designed for kids to organize items into sensory bins based on the type of sensory input it has. This game helps children improve sensory processing and fine motor skills while having fun!

Instructions:

  1. Materials: Gather a variety of small objects with different textures, shapes, sizes, and weights. Examples include soft plush toys, textured balls, smooth stones, squishy toys, pencils, blocks, and more. Print and cut out our sensory category cards (available for download in our mobile app).

  2. Sorting Stations: Set up different sorting stations or containers with each sensory feature on each card, such as a soft bin, a heavy basket, a smooth tray, etc.

  3. Sensory Exploration: Encourage children to explore each object's sensory qualities using their hands. Have them describe how each item feels, whether it's soft, bumpy, squishy, or smooth.

  4. Sorting Challenge: Challenge the children to sort the objects into the appropriate sensory stations based on their qualities. For instance, place soft items in the soft bin and squishy items in the squishy basket.

  5. Fine Motor Skills: As they sort, children will practice fine motor skills like grasping, pinching, and manipulating objects.

  6. Feedback and Discussion: Discuss with the children how they sorted the objects and encourage them to use descriptive words to explain their choices. Some items might fit into two different baskets, like a soft toy might also be colorful, which gives them a great opportunity to make a decision about how they would like to sort those items.

Developmental Benefits:

  • Sensory Processing: Enhances sensory processing abilities by differentiating textures and sensory qualities.

  • Fine Motor Skills: Develops fine motor skills necessary for activities like writing and buttoning.

  • Cognitive Skills: Promotes cognitive skills such as categorization, sorting, and descriptive language.
