You’ll need:
An open space, either indoors or outdoors, with enough room to have a relay race
A set of printed animal walk cards for each child participating
Instructions to play:
Place one set of cards for each team at the starting line.
Select a space. Choose a safe, open indoor or outdoor space to set up the Animal Walk Relay Race.
Divide into teams. For single-child participation, you can either join the child and make your team or turn the activity into a timed challenge.
Explain the activity. Demonstrate each animal walk and explain how to perform them correctly. For example:
Bear crawl: Walk on hands and feet with the hips raised in the air
Crab walk: Walk on hands and feet while facing upward, keeping the stomach elevated
Kangaroo hop: Jump with both feet together, using the arms for balance
Elephant walk: Walk while swinging one arm forward and backward, imitating an elephant's trunk
Start the relay race! Have each team member (or the child) pick an animal card and perform the corresponding animal walk from the starting point to a predetermined endpoint and back. If playing in teams, the participants will swap with a teammate after returning to the starting line until all team members have completed their animal walk.
Encourage and support. Encourage the children throughout the activity and provide guidance as needed to ensure proper movement and technique.
Don’t forget to celebrate a job well done at the end of the race!
