Therapist Feature: Loni Berbaum, SLP

For November’s therapist feature, we are highlighting Loni Berbaum, Speech Language Pathologist.

Loni has worked with Tilton’s kids as an SLP for 1.25 years so far, originally drawn to the profession through her experience growing up around therapists. Since she was 3, Loni’s mom has fostered kids, and they had a lot of different therapists who would come to the house. Being around the therapists allowed Loni to learn from them as they cared for their patients. Another aspect of the profession Loni appreciates is the focus of speech therapy,

“I love talking and food, so I get to teach people how to do the things I love and then things that are basic requirements of being human!”

Working as an SLP for the last four years, Loni has experience in varying environments like schools and clinics, and now is mobile therapy. She most likes the ability to be in the natural environment with the families. Loni loves the age range with fostering human connect via play or engaging in imaginative play.

Originally from the east central farmland of Ivesdale, IL, Loni loves Las Vegas for its lack of snow and sunshine nearly every single day. She has lived in LV for almost two years, and although her whole family lives in Ivesdale, she likes that her new home is a city of transplants. In Las Vegas, there are lots of things to do, and Loni enjoys the city nights along with making trips to national parks, exploring and hiking. She feels that there is a little bit of everything here.

Although Loni still feels like she is learning a lot and actively pursues CEUs, she also gives back to the profession. While working in schools, Loni did presentations on what Speech and Language Pathology is and how it can be integrated into the school framework to help promote understanding about the discipline. During her college studies, Loni also did research on social stories and their impact on typically developing children, resulting in a presentation at ASHA and ISHA.

Occupational balance is very important to maintain, and Loni uses her spare time for some of her other creative passions like vacationing, gardening, reading mysteries or fantasies, playing board games, strategy or puzzle games, or her favorite: exploring new restaurants and trying new food! Loni is an advocate of the arts and is happy attending any kind of show, dance, or theater performance. You can also talk to Loni about collecting stamp books from national park tours!

Loni is passionate about many different things in life, although her work as an SLP is a major passion. She holds her family, friends, and relationships in high importance and enjoys spending quality time with her boyfriend who was in the air force for 7 years. You might find Loni signing, acting, caring for her garden, when she isn’t getting to know all the wonderful kiddos she gets to work with as an SLP!
